Field Engineer - Salt Springs District

Clay Electric Cooperative, Inc., the 9th largest electric cooperative in the nation, is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Field Engineer for our Salt Springs district office. Clay Electric is located in north central Florida, with easy access to beaches, outdoor activities and both college sports and NFL.

Individuals in positions allocated to this class and assigned to a District perform the required work in a district which involves handling electric service applications and maintaining records, and other engineering related activities. Primary responsibilities include handling electric service applications or other service inquires, preparing staking sheets and processing permits/right-of-way easements.

Individuals in positions allocated to this class and assigned to the E & O - Engineering Department perform reliable professional engineering services in the area of system planning, transmission substations and distribution design. Primary responsibilities include minor project engineering and/or developing phases of major projects. Responsibilities may also include performing engineering computations, conducting studies resulting in estimates and surveys which will produce statistical reports used in the design of project specifications.

Essential Job Functions include:

  • Work with customers, builders or developers. Work with customers, builders or developers to assure there is a good understanding between them and Clay Electric about the requirements for new services as stipulated in the Standards for Electric Service and the customer, builder or developer's needs.
  • Job Orders. Receive, stake and process job orders, ensuring required engineering and related data/records are kept up-to-date.
  • Mapping System. Utilize and maintain automated mapping system making sure projects are properly and timely entered into the mapping system to insure accurate engineering data.
  • Engineering Projects. Handle minor project engineering and/or assist in developing phases of major projects.
  • Easements. Prepare and process permits/right-of-way easements. Compile and submit reports as required or directed.
  • Cost Estimates. Prepare cost estimates as required. Make engineering studies, surveys or perform other similar work as needed. Prepare statistics, reports, minor design and project specifications.
  • Contact Manufacturer’s Representatives. Contact manufacturer’s representatives and assume minor supervisory responsibility for construction projects in the field as directed.

Minimum Training and Experience:

This position requires graduation from an accredited college or university with a four (4) year Bachelor of Technology degree plus eighteen (18) months of experience equivalent to an Engineering Technician at Clay Electric Cooperative, Inc.

Individuals in this position must maintain a valid State of Florida driver's license.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

This position requires the knowledge to read circuit diagrams and maps concerning the electric system, to utilize the engineering mapping system, the customer information system, and other computer based systems, as required. This position requires the ability to comprehend and understand construction work plans.

This position requires the ability to prepare work-related studies and surveys. This position requires the ability to work with other divisions in order to render the most efficient service possible. This position requires the ability to design and prepare plans and specifications for electric distribution facilities.

This position requires a comprehensive knowledge of the National Electric Safety Code, Clay Electric’s Construction Standards, Clay Electric’s Standards of Electric Service and be knowledgeable of the National Electric Code.

The physical demands of this position require exposure to adverse elements and the normal hazards associated with working in the field such as opening gates, walking over rough terrain, heavy woods and underbrush, bad dogs and climbing fences. This position may require the employee to travel from time to time and to be available during emergencies, such as storms. This position requires proficient use of a computer.

Apprentice Relay and System Protection Technician

Clay Electric Cooperative, Inc., the 9th largest electric cooperative in the nation, located in Keystone Heights, Florida, is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Apprentice Relay and System Protection Technician.  Clay Electric is located in north Florida, with easy access to beaches, outdoor activities and both college sports and NFL.

Individuals in positions allocated to this class perform technical work involved in substation relay protection devices owned by the cooperative. Primary responsibilities include assisting in the testing, calibrating and installation of complex relaying and control equipment; analyzing and troubleshooting circuits through the use of drawings, circuit analysis and specialized equipment; and providing technical assistance to other departments. 

Essential Job Functions include:

  • Perform Maintenance. Help test, calibrate, repair, and perform routine maintenance on protective relays and microprocessor based relay schemes, and keep accurate records on same. Assist in changing and/or adding control wiring and implement relay settings for upgraded protection and safety on the system. Assist in the installation or major modification of entire substation protection systems, as required for substation construction.  This includes complete rewiring of control panels, and alteration or installation of associated circuits.
  • Substation Protection Systems. Assist in the verification of proper operation of transmission, substation and distribution protection systems, including fault simulation to check all components of protective system prior to energizing the station or line.
  • Use and Care of Tools and Equipment. Be responsible for the use, care and security of tools, parts, vehicle, equipment and materials utilized.

Minimum Training and Experience:

This position requires an Associate of Science degree in electronics, plus specialized training in the field of microprocessor based systems.

Individuals in this position must maintain a valid State of Florida driver's license. A Florida Class A commercial driver’s license must be obtained within the first six (6) months of employment in this position.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Two (2) years of experience in a closely related field is preferred.

This position requires the ability to use electronic test equipment and the knowledge to interpret the results.  This position requires a wide knowledge of electrical theory and practical application of theoretical concepts.

This position requires the ability to use personal computers in the scope of programming microprocessor based relay schemes.

This position requires the ability to help operate vital equipment, assist in the restoration of electrical power to transmission and distribution devices during emergencies, and to help work on energized control circuits without interrupting electrical service. 

This position requires the ability to understand the meaning and significance of manufacturers’ technical publications.

Project Coordinator

The primary responsibility for this position is managing software implementations. Embrace the opportunity to use your people skills to conduct a high level of effective customer interaction and your project management skills to establish expectations and timelines throughout the software implementation process. Become an active member of the team by providing application support to customers, validating converted data, conduct training, and respond to questions regarding the software application and the conversion process. Experience with NISC or similar utility-based ERP solutions preferred.

Individuals in this position are responsible for developing, coordinating and delivering projects for Clay Electric-related systems and solutions in order to promote the highest quality of customer service and efficiency. 

Essential Job Functions of this position include:

  • Support Management.  Provide consultation to management and stakeholders on project initiatives as well as potential impacts to other systems or initiatives. Ensure projects adhere to frameworks and all documentation is maintained appropriately for each project. Determine project changes and provide proposed strategies to drive projects towards successful completion.
  • Support Users.  Ensure stakeholder expectations are managed towards the best solution. Chair and facilitate meetings where appropriate and distribute minutes to all project team members. Explore opportunities to add value to user desired outcomes.
  • Communicate.  Keep all affected parties informed of project progress, changes in plans, system changes and issues, etc.
  • Support Projects.  Provide support for major and minor information and communication technology projects. Develop, monitor and revise project work plans and schedules. Execute plans, including managing system testing, engineering support, user training and other tasks required for overall project success. Communicate, coordinate and cooperate with a large number of employees, without direct authority. 
  • Support Team.  Support project management activities, resources, equipment and information. Work with the Project Manager to identify and eliminate roadblocks which may impede project completion. Create and maintain comprehensive project documentation, plans and reports.
  • Analyst.  Create, manage and disburse reports related to the project status.
  • Leadership. Provide leadership and direction to other assigned resources in a matrix environment in pursuit of a project. Examples of assigned resources include contractors, consultants, vendors and other CEC employees.

The Minimum Training and Experience required for this position is:

This position requires a two (2) year college degree from an accredited college or university and two (2) years of experience coordinating or managing small-to-medium-sized projects.

This position requires certification as a CompTIA Project+ to be obtained within twelve (12) months from the date of employment.

Individuals in this position must maintain a valid State of Florida driver’s license.

Substitution:

Related experience may be substituted for required education on a year-for-year basis. 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities needed for this position include:

Apprentice Meter Technician

Individuals in positions allocated to this class perform basic technical work required in connection with the installation, maintenance, operation, testing and service of all types of electric meters and other related equipment. Primary responsibility includes assisting and installing, testing, repairing, calibrating and performing maintenance on electric meters and related equipment.

Essential Job Functions include:

  • Meters & Power Quality. Assist in installing, testing, repairing, calibrating and performing maintenance on all types of electric meters and other related equipment. Assist in installing recording instruments for power quality investigations and the submittal process to engineering.
  • Meter/AMI Software & Tools. Be proficient in the use of laptop and personal computers. Gain a working knowledge of MV90 software, AMI meter testing tools and software, and become familiar with manufacturers’ software for programming of solid state meters.
  • Records & Reports. Submit and record material and retirement information in accordance with established procedures, to include changeouts for load increases and defective material or equipment. Assist in coordinating planned outages with members and district offices for metering equipment changeouts and maintenance projects. Assist in maintaining the necessary records and periodic reports required for proper control of all electric meters and related equipment maintenance programs.
  • Tools and Equipment. Be familiar with the proper operation and safe use of all tools and work equipment including derrick trucks, aerial lift trucks, forklifts, and other types of equipment used in the performance of their job duties. Be responsible for test equipment used on all electric meters and other test equipment, to include metering equipment at member level and in substations.

Minimum Training and Experience Requirements:

This position requires a two (2) year Associate of Science degree in electronics from an accredited college or university with course work in microprocessor based systems, or equivalent training from a technical institution. This position requires two (2) years of experience in a closely related field. Additional related experience may be substituted for the educational requirements on a year for year basis. Individuals in this position must maintain a valid State of Florida driver's license.

Lineman

Clay Electric Cooperative, Inc., the 9th largest cooperative in the nation, located in Keystone Heights, Florida, is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Lineman in the following areas: Lake City District, Gainesville District, Palatka District, Keystone District, and Salt Springs District. Individuals in positions allocated to this class perform the most advanced and skilled work required in connection with the construction, maintenance, operations and service of transmission, overhead and underground distribution lines, protective equipment, substations and related equipment owned and operated by the Cooperative.

Essential job functions include:

  • Construction and Maintenance of Power Lines. Install, remove, inspect and maintain both overhead and underground lines and equipment.
  • Switching Operations.  Perform switching operations on energized and de-energized lines and equipment, utilizing the Electric Systems Control Manual, UAI system and all safety precautions.
  • Troubleshooting and Outage Restoration.  Working independently or with others, systematically perform all duties associated with troubleshooting lines and equipment to restore electric service.
  • Operation of Equipment.  Operate construction equipment such as line truck, bucket truck, trenchers and other equipment as required. Comply with all traffic laws and related safety rules and safe work practices.

Minimum Training and Experience Requirements:

This position requires a high school certificate or State of Florida GED passing grade plus additional training equivalent to Clay Electric's Lineman Development Training Program and four (4) years of experience in an electric distribution utility, preferably through the progression of Apprentice line work. This position also requires a valid Florida Class A commercial driver's license or a Florida Class A restricted commercial driver's license.
