Hurricane season is here, but Floridians no longer have to wait for a temporary sales tax holiday to stock up on many storm-prep supplies.
Several items that were previously exempt during limited-time tax holidays are now sales-tax exempt year-round in Florida. The permanent exemption began Aug. 1, 2025, and includes several common items used before and after severe weather.
Eligible items include AA, AAA, C, D, 6-volt and 9-volt batteries; portable gas or diesel fuel cans with a capacity of 5 gallons or less; portable generators capable of producing 10,000 running watts or less; smoke detection devices; carbon monoxide alarms; fire extinguishers; ground anchor systems and tie-down kits; and waterproof tarps and sheeting that are 1,000 square feet or less.

There's no need to wait until a storm is in the forecast, or until stores are crowded, to begin preparing. Clay Electric encourages members to review their hurricane supplies early, replace expired or missing items and make sure their household is ready before severe weather threatens the area.
